Every author is looking to make their writing the best it can be. Active Pennwriters members are eligible to participate in the Pennwriters Critique Partner program.
This program is designed to match people up with the most suitable partners possible, for any kind of writing. Fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, anything is accepted. It can be novels, short stories, essays, magazine articles, technical writing, or writing for role-playing games. Whatever kind of writing, we’ll do our best to find the right partner for you. Pennwriters' goal is to match up writers with partners who are also interested in taking their work to the next level.
We'll gather information on what type of writing a person does, what genre (if fiction), and find out what stage the work in progress is at. A Beta Reader may be the best option for a completed manuscript. Normally a Beta Reader reads the entire work and gives reader reaction. The comments are usually holistic and focus on how well the entire piece works and what response it evoked.
A Critique Partner can help in either case but may best for a work in progress. They function as a sounding board who can show the author what’s working or not. Is the pacing good? Are the characterizations coming through clearly? Is the setting vivid? They can also point out language issues, such as spelling, grammar, or word choice.
Other aspects of the process involve assistance with setting up a schedule both parties can agree upon, and ensuring partners start off on the right foot (or on the same page) with good communication and clear expectations.
